Best Time to Raft the Zambezi — Season by Season
The best time to raft the Zambezi is the low-water season — roughly August to December — when the river drops enough to open the full run of up to 25 rapids below Victoria Falls. High water (about January to March) shortens the run, and at peak flood (around April to May) commercial rafting is usually suspended for safety. If you want the biggest single-day rafting experience, aim for September to December.
The Zambezi's flow swings dramatically through the year, and that flow decides which rapids run. Understanding the seasons is the difference between the full 25-rapid day and finding the river closed.
Low water (August – December): the full season
This is the prime window. As the river drops, more of the gorge becomes runnable, technical rapids open up, and trips put in higher — near the Boiling Pot below the Falls. Days are warm and the famous full-day run of all 25 rapids is available. The Swim Below Victoria Falls also opens in this window (mid-August to December).
High water (January – March): shorter and pushier
During and after the rains the river is high and powerful. Rafting still runs, but usually a shorter stretch of the lower gorge, with fewer individual rapids that are bigger and more continuous. It is a good option if that is when you are travelling, but it is not the full experience.
Peak flood (April – May): usually closed
At the height of the flood the river is typically too high to raft commercially, and operators suspend trips for safety. The exact closure and reopening dates shift year to year with rainfall, so always check before planning a trip in this window.
Month-by-month summary
| Period | Water level | What runs | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aug – Dec | Low water | Full run — up to all 25 rapids | Peak season. Best rapids, warmest days, the Swim Below the Falls opens. |
| Jan – Mar | High water | Shortened run (lower gorge) | Fewer, pushier rapids; some sections skipped for safety. |
| Apr – May | Peak flood | Rafting usually suspended | River too high to run commercially. Exact dates vary each year. |
| Jun – Jul | Dropping | Run reopens and lengthens | Cooler mornings; the full low-water season builds from here. |
Planning tip: for the best balance of full-length run, warm weather and the Swim Below the Falls, target September to early December — the heart of the low-water season.
Frequently asked
What is the best month to raft the Zambezi?+
September to December is ideal — the river is at low water, the full run of up to 25 rapids is open, days are warm, and the Swim Below Victoria Falls is available. August is also excellent as the season builds.
Can you raft the Zambezi in April or May?+
Usually not. Around April–May the river is at peak flood and commercial rafting is generally suspended for safety. Reopening dates vary each year with rainfall, so confirm before booking travel for that window.
Is high-water or low-water rafting better?+
Low water (Aug–Dec) opens the full, longer run with the most rapids and is the classic experience. High water (Jan–Mar) is a shorter run with bigger, more continuous rapids — thrilling, but not the full gorge.
