Batoka Gorge Rapids Guide: The Zambezi's 25 Rapids
The Batoka Gorge below Victoria Falls holds around 25 numbered rapids, graded mostly III to V, run over a full day from near the Boiling Pot. The most famous include the big Grade V drops in the opening stretch and the notorious flip-maker known as Oblivion. How many you raft depends on the water level: the full run opens at low water (August to December), while high water shortens it. Rapid names and numbers vary slightly between operators and seasons.
Part of what makes the Zambezi legendary is the sheer concentration of big rapids packed into the Batoka Gorge. Here is how the run is structured and what the famous rapids are.
How the run is numbered
Rapids are counted downstream from the put-in near the Boiling Pot, just below Victoria Falls. A full-day low-water trip runs from Rapid 1 through to around Rapid 25. Shorter trips take a slice of this — for example the Best 7 Rapids covers the famous opening stretch (Rapids 1–7) in about two hours.
The famous rapids
Names have been handed down by guides over decades and can differ slightly between operators, but several are iconic on the river:
- The opening Grade V drops in the first stretch set the tone — steep, punchy and continuous.
- Commercial Suicide — a Grade V–VI rapid that is usually portaged (walked around) rather than run.
- The Mother — a long, powerful wave train deeper in the gorge.
- Oblivion — perhaps the most famous, notorious for flipping more rafts than any other rapid on the river.
Rapid grades and which rapids run change with the water level — the same numbered rapid can feel very different at low versus high water. Your guide picks the day's lines accordingly.
Which trip covers which rapids
| Trip | Rapids | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| Best 7 Rapids | 1 – 7 | The famous opening stretch, ~2 hrs |
| Half-Day Rafting | A section of the gorge | 4–5 hrs of Grade III–V |
| Full-Day Rafting | 1 – 25 | The complete run, 7–8 hrs |
| 2-Day Rafting | To rapid 25 + beyond overnight | Deep-gorge expedition |
The hike out
The Batoka Gorge is deep, so most full-length trips finish with a steep climb out on foot. It is demanding but manageable at your own pace, and the guides keep the group together. Factor it into the fitness you'll want for the full-day and multi-day trips.
