White-Water Rafting the Zambezi: The Complete Guide
Rafting the Zambezi through the Batoka Gorge, just below Victoria Falls, is widely rated one of the best one-day white-water runs on earth — up to 25 rapids graded III to V. The best time to go is the low-water season, roughly August to December. Half-day trips start around $140 and full-day trips (all 25 rapids) around $160. You can raft from either Livingstone (Zambia) or Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe); it is the same river and gorge.
The stretch of the Zambezi immediately below Victoria Falls, known as the Batoka Gorge, is a bucket-list white-water destination. Sheer basalt walls hundreds of metres high funnel the river into a near-continuous series of big, warm-water rapids. This guide covers what to expect, when to come, what it costs and how to choose a trip.
Where is it and what makes it special
The put-in is close to the Boiling Pot, the churning pool directly beneath Victoria Falls, near Livingstone in Zambia. From there the river drops through the Batoka Gorge past a run of famous rapids. Unlike many rivers, the Zambezi is warm, the water is deep, and the rapids are punctuated by calm pools — so a flip (which happens) is exhilarating rather than dangerous when you are with a professional crew.
The trips
Most visitors choose between a short taster, a half day or the full 25-rapid day. There are also multi-day expeditions and non-rafting river experiences.
| Trip | Duration | From (USD pp) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best 7 Rapids | ~2 hrs | $80 | First-timers, short on time |
| Half-Day Rafting | 4–5 hrs | $140 | The classic taste of the gorge |
| Full-Day Rafting | 7–8 hrs | $160 | All 25 rapids, the complete day |
| 2-Day Rafting | 2 days | $360 | Overnight expedition, max 6 guests |
| Swim Below the Falls | ~5 hrs | $80 | Cliff jumps & pools (Aug–Dec only) |
| Sunset Mokoro Cruise | ~2.5 hrs | $90 | A calm, non-rafting evening on the river |
How hard is it? Rapid grades
The commercially run rapids are mostly Grade III to V (on the international I–VI scale, where VI is considered unrunnable). You do not need rafting experience: guides scout and brief the bigger rapids, safety kayakers accompany every trip, and you paddle only when told. A moderate level of fitness helps, especially for the climb out of the gorge at the end of longer trips.
When to go
Season is the single biggest factor in your trip. Low water (about August to December) gives the longest run and the most rapids; at peak flood (around April–May) rafting is usually suspended for safety.
| Period | Water level | What runs | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aug – Dec | Low water | Full run — up to all 25 rapids | Peak season. Best rapids, warmest days, the Swim Below the Falls opens. |
| Jan – Mar | High water | Shortened run (lower gorge) | Fewer, pushier rapids; some sections skipped for safety. |
| Apr – May | Peak flood | Rafting usually suspended | River too high to run commercially. Exact dates vary each year. |
| Jun – Jul | Dropping | Run reopens and lengthens | Cooler mornings; the full low-water season builds from here. |
The Swim Below Victoria Falls — scrambling and cliff-jumping into pools right beneath the Falls — only runs mid-August to December, when water levels are low enough to reach it safely.
What's included and what to bring
- Included: pickup and return from your Livingstone lodge, a professional local guide, safety kayakers, and all safety equipment (helmet, life jacket, paddle). Longer trips add lunch.
- Bring: swimwear worn under your clothes, secure-strap sandals or old trainers, sunscreen and a hat, and a towel plus a dry change of clothes.
- Optional: a waterproof case if you want to carry a phone; professional photos and video of your trip can be arranged.
How to book
You can book online in a few minutes with a deposit, or message the team on WhatsApp — useful if you are already in Livingstone and want to go the next day. Groups of six or more are arranged directly. Because the same-day availability is good for rafting (unlike some Livingstone activities that book out months ahead), on-arrival booking is realistic in most of the season.
Frequently asked
Do I need rafting experience to raft the Zambezi?+
No. The trips are run for first-timers. Local guides brief and scout the big rapids, safety kayakers accompany every trip, and you only paddle when the guide asks. Moderate fitness is enough.
How much does rafting the Zambezi cost?+
As a guide: a ~2-hour taster starts around $80, a half day around $140, and the full 25-rapid day around $160. Multi-day expeditions start around $360. Prices are per person and include pickup, guiding and safety equipment.
Which side is better, Zambia or Zimbabwe?+
It is the same river and the same gorge. Livingstone (Zambia) and Victoria Falls town (Zimbabwe) simply put in at different points depending on season. Choose based on where you are staying; the KAZA UniVisa lets most visitors cross freely.
