Zambezi river conditions, late July 2026 — the low-water season is opening up

As of late July 2026 the Zambezi is dropping into its low-water window, and the full Batoka Gorge run is opening back up. Full-day trips through all 25 rapids are running from Livingstone, mornings are cool and the water is warm. The peak low-water season builds from August through December, and the Swim Below the Falls reopens in mid-August.
Late July is one of our favourite times on the river. The high-water months are behind us, the Zambezi is dropping steadily, and the Batoka Gorge is opening back up to its full length. If you are planning a trip in the next few months, here is exactly where things stand.
Which trips are running right now
The full run is back. As the water drops, more of the gorge's 25 rapids come into play, and full-day trips from Livingstone are running the complete descent with a riverside lunch and the classic hike out at the end. Half-day trips and the Best 7 Rapids are running too, and are a good choice if you want a shorter first taste of the white water.
The one trip still waiting is the Swim Below Victoria Falls — it reopens in mid-August, once levels drop far enough to reach the pools safely.
What the water is doing
The Zambezi runs on an annual flood cycle, not on rain that week, so conditions are predictable season to season:

Right now we are in that late-July "dropping" phase, heading into the best months of the year.
What to expect if you come now
Mornings in the gorge are cool and clear this time of year, and the water stays warm all day — the Zambezi is a warm-water river, which is part of what makes a flip exhilarating rather than miserable. Days are mostly sunny. The rapids are big and continuous, and because the low-water season is only just building, the river is quieter than it will be in the busy September–October stretch.
If you want the full 25-rapid day with the best weather and the fewest crowds, the back half of July and the first weeks of August are a genuinely good window.
Booking a trip in the next few months
